“I express my emotions through my art work, rather than speak them out loud” says Sean Williams of Edwardsville. Williams will be a returning student to Lewis and Clark College in the spring of 2009. He is currently pursuing an Associates Degree in Fine Arts and has approximately 18 credits remaining. Following graduation from Lewis and Clark Williams plans to attend SIUE, in order to attain a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. Finalizing his education with a Maters Degree from an out of state art school and is currently undecided on which school he will attend. His long term goal is to become a college professor of art and train others to master the skill of drawing.
Williams’ art work is the essence of surrealism. He is inspired by the surrealist artist Salvador Dali and one can see a similar type of expression when viewing Williams’ imagery. It is a mix of dreamlike illustrations tangled with fantastic figures of the unordinary. Williams creates images that escape the thoughts of mundane life and takes one on a journey to the extraordinary.
Viewing the sketch (bottom) one can see how Williams’ emotions are depicted through his drawings. At first glance, one’s eyes are immediately drawn to the middle of the picture, where a line cuts between a boy and girl. Behind the boy lies a shadowy, monstrous figure pulling him away, a feeling of fear and anxiety build up. Yet as one gazes to the right of the drawing a sense of prosperity and a feeling of hope begin to occur. There seems to be a force pushing the girl toward the boy, bringing them together. This symbolizes the oscillating
emotions each one has for the other. There is a longing to be with one another yet discouragement comes with the many obstacles they face. Above them flutters an angel of destiny who watches the unfolding events in their lives, deciding the outcome for each one. To the top, middle portion of the sketch lies a circle, it is colored half white and half black. This represents a balance between confusion and clarity because their feelings of love and anger are in constant flux. Many of Williams’ works follow this style of art. It is his perception of a relationship that feeds life into his drawings.to contact sean williams visit his myspace account at www.myspace.com/xxschinxx
